EVANGELISM

A FREE COURSE COMPLIMENTS OF DALLAS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

SESSION TWO

Defining Our Terms: witness

In this session, we talk about our witness to the non-believing world.

LESSON POINTS

  • Part of drawing people to Christ is living out the truth of the gospel.

  • One of the reasons for the incredible growth of the early church was the way Christians worked, in contrast to their culture, to promote the dignity of women.

  • Christianity grew during the plagues of the Roman Empire when pagans saw Christians sacrificing their lives to care for others.

  • We can point people to the truth of the gospel by using words of encouragement and kindness even when we aren’t explicitly proclaiming the gospel.

WORSHIP MOMENT

In this lesson, we talked about living today in light of the world that is coming. We feed people today because there’s no hunger in the world to come. We build hospitals today because there’s no sickness in the world to come. We work for justice for our brothers and sisters today because there’s no injustice in the world to come. Praise God for preparing a place for us that is free of hunger, sickness, and injustice! Praise Him for giving us the opportunity to work for His kingdom now even as we wait for the world to come!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • Some think it’s wrong for Christians to spend money and effort on caring for someone’s physical needs because it’s money and effort that should be devoted to proclaiming the gospel. What’s wrong with this thinking?

  • What stories do you know of Christian communities doing a good job of bearing witness to the truth of the gospel through acts of compassion?

  • Have you ever had a friend or family member who truly exhibited Christlike behavior? What did the person say or do that stood out most to you?

FURTHER STUDY

  • Matthew 4; 1 Peter 2–3
