At Mercy’s Door, we believe Christ is Lord over every part of life. Everything we have is a gift of grace from God. The cross is the ultimate display of generosity, where Jesus gave everything to reconcile us to God. In response, we give cheerfully, sacrificially, and consistently as an act of worship, reminding one another of the generosity of our good God.
THE ATTITUDES OF GIVING
CHEERFULNESS
In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus says, ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This indicates the strong connection between our money and love. Where our treasure is, our heart is.
God wants our giving to be done cheerfully. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, we read, “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
At Mercy’s Door, we never pass a plate. We don’t want anyone to give out of compulsion or guilt, or to respond to an object as it passes by or to the person sitting next to them. We want everyone to give joyfully and voluntarily for the sake of the kingdom work in their church.
HUMILITY
In Matthew 6:1-4, Jesus instructs us that God wants us to give humbly without seeking credit.
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
LOVE
In 1 Corinthians 13:3, we read, “If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” In all that we do in the life of the church, at Mercy’s Door, we believe that our primary motive is to be love for Jesus Christ and love for our neighbor.
