At Mercy’s Door, we believe that Christ claims ownership of every area of our lives. He is creator of all, owner of all, and king over all. And He is worthy of our worship in every area. What we have as a church, we count as pure grace from the Lord. We recognize that as the church, we must consistently remind one another of the truth that everything we have is a gift from the Lord. Jesus' death on the cross represents the most generous gift ever given–when the King of Glory gave up everything in order to reconcile us to God. Giving cheerfully, sacrificially, and consistently is a part of our worship. When we are generous with others, we are reminding one another of the great generosity of our good God.
THE ATTITUDES OF GIVING
CHEERFULNESS
In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus says, ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This indicates the strong connection between our money and love. Where our treasure is, our heart is.
God want’s our giving to be done cheerfully. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, we read, “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
At Mercy’s Door, we never pass a plate. We don’t want anyone to give out of compulsion or guilt, or to respond to an object as it passes by or to the person sitting next to them. We want everyone to give joyfully and voluntarily for the sake of the kingdom work in their church.
HUMILITY
In Matthew 6:1-4, Jesus instructs us that God wants us to give humbly without seeking credit.
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
LOVE
In 1 Corinthians 13:3, we read, “If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” In all that we do in the life of the church, at Mercy’s Door, we believe that our primary motive is to be love for Jesus Christ and love for our neighbor.
