EVANGELISM

A FREE COURSE COMPLIMENTS OF DALLAS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY.

SESSION SEVEN

FOLLOWING UP

In this session, we learn the last step of evangelism.

LESSON POINTS

  • The Great Commission is a call to make disciples who live for Christ and not a call to make converts who only assent to belief in Christ.

  • It’s important to talk to new believers about assurance of salvation. They will continue to sin, but that does not mean they’ve quit being a Christian.

  • New believers also need to know about church involvement, reading the Bible, and praying.

  • Long-term follow-up involves getting new Christians on a trajectory of growth in Christ.

  • In the early church, as the gospel spread to people with less and less familiarity with the one true God, it became necessary for people to be trained in the faith.

WORSHIP MOMENT

In Colossians 2:6–7, we read a biblical command: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” How wonderful that God gives us the opportunity to be built up in Christ! May we all be strengthened in the faith, and may we teach others that they may also grow and be strengthened.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • Part of the immediate follow-up is encouraging people to get involved in a local church. We need our local churches in order to grow and serve. Are you an active member of your local church? If you or someone you know needs help finding a church, this website might help.

  • If you were to lead someone to Christ on an airplane and you only had a short time for immediate follow-up, what would you say?

  • In the early church, there was a danger of people bringing the worldview of their culture into the church. What unbiblical worldviews of your culture are trying to sneak into your church?

FURTHER STUDY

  • Matthew 28; Acts 10
